Good going for Shanghai firms
One of the success stories concerns Shanghai-based Sanxin International, which launched its new 3SB71 circuit breaker at this year's fair. Developed in February and applicable to various types of buildings, this small new model was aimed at high-end customers and attracted the attention of dozens of clients from Europe and South America. Sanxin International signed contracts worth about $2 million in just the first two days of the fair, which represents an increase of more than 20 percent in contract value from last year.
Shanghai Toy Import and Export Ltd also created new breakthroughs at this session of Canton Fair. It established a partnership with a children's cart factory in Pinghu in Zhejiang Province, developed new products tailored for the overseas market and used all available channels to push sales. Due to proper production and sales activity, the company has recently seen an increase in its number of clients and orders, holding fruitful negotiations with more than 30 foreign clients at the ongoing China Import and Export Fair - the official name for the Canton Fair.
Shanghai Wanxiang Daily Cosmetics Ltd followed the market trend by increasing investments in advanced technology and equipment, which in turn helped the company achieve good results in the two recent sessions of the Canton Fair. The fi rm reaped over $30 million from deals struck in the fairs and in the subsequent period.
Canton Fair opens 101st session, seeking trade balance
China's largest trade exhibition, the 101st session of the Canton fair, which for the first time features imported commodities, opened in south China's Guangdong Province on Sunday.
The massive trade exhibition, known for the past 50 years as the Chinese Export Commodities Fair, has added the word import to its name and is now formally known as the Chinese Import and Export Commodities Fair.
The fair came about one month after Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao pledged in his government work report made in early March that China will continue adjusting its foreign trade structure and actively promote imports.
The import section this year features the products of 314 foreign companies from 36 countries and regions. They're offering a wide range of products from machinery, automobiles, IT products, household electric appliances, building materials, jewelry and food and agricultural products.
At least 6,000 Chinese corporate buyers have been invited to the fair, which runs from April 15 to April 30.
"By adding booths for foreign commodities, the Fair will transform itself from an exclusive occasion for exports to a platform for promoting both imports and exports," said Gao Hucheng, vice minister of Commerce, at the fair.
Gao said China encourages imports of advanced technology and energy-saving equipment and technology. It also encourages competent foreign enterprises to participate in the imports of major facilities and equipment in China, and welcomes competitive foreign firms and products to enter the Chinese market.
Lam Tin-fuk, executive director of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, said he has led 40 Hong Kong firms to attend the fair, adding "Introduction of the import section shows that China's foreign trade has shifted from mere export to balanced development of both import and export.
"Having face to face conversation with potential Chinese buyers helps me understand what they want, which is very useful for our products to enter the Chinese market," said Paul Kidwell, general manager of the UK Bathroom Corporation Ltd.
At the fair, cars by Volkswagen, Audi, Ferrari and other trendy foreign cars took center stage in the 10,000-square-kilometer exhibition hall, drawing large crowds of visitors.
Along the exhibits of the world's largest corporations are displays of silverware and garments from Nepal and arts and crafts from Mali, India and Haiti.
Sebastian Kopulande, chairperson of the Zambia-China Business Association, says the fair "is an opportunity for Zambian manufacturers to expand their business", adding that 37 companies from his country are attending.
Chinese exporters still dominate the fair with 14,430 exhibitors participating, 429 more than in the last fair.
Last year, more than 190,000 buyers from around the world signed deals worth 34 billion U.S. dollars, said Xu Bing, deputy secretary general of the fair.
The fair, which is also known as the Canton Fair, is a biannual event that has been held in the spring and autumn since 1957.
By introducing imports to the fair, China aims to increase products sold to the country and lower its trade surplus, said Xu.
In 2006, China recorded sizzling economic growth of just under 11 per cent, largely powered by strong exports which rose by 27 percent to 969 billion U.S. dollars. The soaring exports expanded China's trade surplus to a record 178 billion dollars, up 74 percent from the previous record of 102 billion dollars set in 2005.
China has lowered export tax rebates since last September to help lower its trade surplus, which stood at 46.44 billion U.S. dollars in the first quarter of this year. The trade surplus in March dropped to 6.87 billion U.S. dollars, dipping below the 10 billion U.S. dollar mark for the first time since March 2006.
At a press conference ahead of Sunday's opening ceremony, Xu Bing said the centennial fair will make further efforts to boost intellectual property rights protection.
He said any exhibitor found to have infringed on any designs or brands will be banned from participating in the next four events. Those convicted for violating intellectual property rights will be banned from participating in the next six events.
The move was made in response to the United States' WTO complaints last week over copyright piracy in China.
Last autumn's session of the fair attracted 192,691 buyers from212 countries and regions, including 106,716 from around Asia, followed by Europe, America and Africa.

Liuhua Complex Brief Introduction
Besides the Fair, many other exhibitions also choose CECF (Liuhua) Complex as their venue partly because of its location in Guangzhou, which is both the biggest city and economic center in southern China and enjoys an open market. Now about 80 to 100 exhibitions are held in the Fairground every year. Some of them, like China International Furniture Fair, Guangdong Beauty and Cosmetic Expo, Shoes and Leather Exhibition, China International Building and Decoration Fair, AD Exhibition, and Guangzhou International Automobile Exhibition, rank with China's well-known exhibition for their large size, high reputation and professional visitors.
CECF (Liuhua) Complex 's high reputation and credibility that are formed in a long history of exhibition is another cause of its popularity among the organizers of various exhibitions. To the latter, its location in one of the most prosperous areas in Guangzhou is also attractive since they always take transportation convenience into their consideration.
In order to keep up with the rapid development of exhibition industry, China Foreign Trade Centre (Group), the operating organization of the Fairground has invested a great deal to decorate and reconstruct some of its exhibition halls. Meanwhile it has made every effort to develop a staff of professional knowledge and experience that can work together to provide high-leveled services for the exhibition. It is firmly believed that almost every kind of exhibition can be held in the Fairground and the organizers will be satisfied with its facilities and services.
Under the circumstance that exhibition industry is uprising in many big cities in China, Chinese Export Commodities Fairground sincerely invites the people, who are going to or have taken up exhibition work, to hold exhibitions in the Fairground and to step into a great future hand in hand.

Pazhou Complex Brief Introduction
Area: The total land area of Pazhou Complex is 700000m². For the first phase of the project, a total of 430000m² of land is used. The total construction area is 395000m². Sixteen exhibition halls are built, among which the land area of indoor exhibition halls is 160000m², and that of outdoor exhibition sites is 22000m². It is by now the largest exhibition centre in Asia.
Roof and Walls: The roof adopts large span space truss of prestressed sustained steel tube, using 15000 tons of steel. The surface uses frosted stainless steel. The external walls in the east, west and north are glass walls. With a total area of 58000m², these glass walls give a brilliant and spectacular appearance.
Design Principle: The main design principle of Pazhou Complex is to extend the image of "flowing" of Pearl River. The wave like rooftop just likes the river flowing by. It integrates with surrounding environment elegantly. This design principle is unparalleled in all of the exhibition centres in the world.

2007 China Canton Fair Phase II
UN Seeks Suppliers at 2007 China Canton Fair
The UNP-Canton Fair Promotion Center will serve as a platform for Chinese companies to supply the UN and is expected to greatly boost the UN's procurement from China.
Chinese commodities are very competitive in both price and quality, but many Chinese companies missed business opportunities with the UN due to a lack of information and knowledge of the rules and processes of UN procurement, said Yavar Khan, chief of the UNPS procurement headquarters.
Khan said any companies holding ISO 9000 certification and operating for at least three years with a stable financial status were eligible to supply the UN.
Chen Zhaoren, deputy director of the China Foreign Trade Center, an organization under the Ministry of Commerce, said firms supplying the UN were exempted from tariffs and would encounter no trade barriers.
UN procurement has attracted many small and medium-sized Chinese companies. More than 2,000 Chinese firms have become registered suppliers at the UNPS since it launched the first promotion campaign at the Canton Fair in 2000. However, the figure is only 1 percent of the world's total.
Khan expressed the hope that more Chinese companies will be involved in UN procurement after the center established.
The UNPS spends more than 30 billion U.S. dollars annually on products and services for UN agencies, peace-keeping troops, and other activities. Foodstuffs, medical items, machinery and electronic components top the list of purchases.

Guangzhou Geared for More Metro-Bus Connection
The hubs at Xiajiao, Dashi and other similar metro stations will soon be renovated for connection to bus, cars and motorcycles.
Seven newly-opened special bus lines for metro connection have been very popular, with total load of 35,000 passenger/times from December 30, 2006, when metro lines 3 and 4 were put into public operation, to January 1, 2007, according to the statistics of Guangzhou Transportation Commission (GTC).
More efforts will be taken to extend the connecting bus lines into residential communities and other places where are out of subway reach, said the representative of GTC.
The representative also remarked fundamental changes to rail traffic service are taking place in urban public transportation structure in Guangzhou now, subsequently in comprehensive traffic network.

What Are the Differences Between Chinese Food and Your Own?
Alan is having a fish at Guangzhou Restaurant.
Another difference is that we don't have anything like the variety of dishes that you have here. You would find pretty much the same kind of British food whether you are in the north or south of England for example, though there are some regional differences between England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
To many British people breakfast is the most important meal of the day and here I would take a traditional British breakfast of bacon, sausage, eggs, beans, mushrooms, toast… over a Chinese breakfast any day.
Kimberly (from Maryland, US): It seems that Cantonese (local Chinese) food centers around just a few ingredients per dish.
In America when I'm cooking I usually use a bunch of different spices. Although the local food here doesn't use as many ingredients it doesn't lack in flavor. I also find that local food is mainly cooked on the stove which often means that it's greasy. I'm not a big fan of the stove I prefer the oven. I like to bake my dishes because I feel that it's less oily and I can also stick it in the oven and do other things while it's cooking. The opposite of this is that ovens usually take a while to cook the food. Stove top food
here is cooked relatively quickly and dinner is usually served in the home in less time.
It's hard to compare the two types of food because they really are so vastly different. If I had any real gripes with the local dishes I would have to say it's the bones! In the U.S. when we eat a dish with bones, usually a whole rib or chicken leg, we use our hands and a lot of times we get dirty doing it. I like to handle my food but here in China the people have a different way of eating using chopsticks and the pieces of meat are small with little pieces of bones. It takes a lot of practice and real talent to eat a dish of what I refer to as "meat flavored bones" properly.
David (from Adelaide, Australia): No difference. Chinese food is a subset of Australian food, a category which also includes Italian, Vietnamese, Spanish, French, Japanese, Korean, Greek, Lebanese, Arabian and American food. Australia is an immigrant country, and is therefore not bound to any one culinary style.
Jorg (from Munich, Germany): Between Chinese and German food…well…I am not too familiar of German food so I can just tell you German cuisine is more heavy with sausage, potatoes…strong food for strong people with the beer of all meals…Chinese food is more light and more nice to see, more delicate and sophisticate. Pleasure of the eyes, the noose and the mouth…for the Chinese food…German one is more basic.
CONGRATULATORY MESSAGE FOR 100 YEARS ANNIVERSARY OF THE CANTON FAIR FROM THE BRAZIL CHINA CHAMBER
Even people without any previous knowledge of China, or China experience, can come away from the Canton Fair after only a few days with an understanding of the magnitude of what China produce. A feel for its quality, technology, design and pricing can be sensed from this short exposure in the fair and a first hand knowledge can be learned of the Asian Giant. I always mention in my articles and speeches that the Canton Fair offers everything from toothpicks to those with the most advanced, state of the art technology.
China’s wealth creation, development and emergence as a world class economic power of ever growing importance are significantly based on its exports.
Undoubtedly, the success and surge of China’s foreign trade can be directly linked to the importance of the Canton Fair. For fifty years the Canton Fair has continuously been an important event in the agendas of many of the people that make history happen and business move from around the world. Without any doubt this has contributed immensely to promote an understanding of China, create friendship with businesses, organizations and authorities from all the world.
The organizers of this fair are also tireless promoters of this event. Over the years since our foundation in 1986, our Chamber has been proud to have organized conferences with presentation by our Chamber and the Canton Fair leaders to business leaders and authorities in the Federations of Industries and Commercial Associations of almost every state in Brazil. Complete information in the Portuguese language about the Canton Fair can be found in our Chamber’s bilingual website. The Governor of the State of Santa Catarina, who was formerly the Brazilian Minister of Science and Technology that signed the successful Sino Brazilian Aerospace Agreement in 1988, is grateful to the Organization of the Canton Fair and to Mr. Chen Barong, Vice President, for the warm reception and assistance during our delegation’s visit to the fair on October of last year.
Most of the hundreds of Brazilian businessmen that join the various delegations to the Canton Fair organized by our Chamber every semester have done significant business during and after their visits to this important showcase of China. During October of
2004 we organized the visit to the Canton Fair of the Presidents and senior management of more than twenty large textile industries members of SINTEX, their trade association in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. Most of the companies that joined this visit to the Canton Fair went to China for the first time and are now doing business with Chinese companies. One company, Rovitex, while in the trade fair for the first time, ordered three hundred thousand pairs of Bermudas per month. We believe that the volume of business generated from the Brazilian delegations that our Chamber sends to the Canton fair represent the growth of trade volume between the two giants. This volume climbed from US$ 1.5 billion in 1999 to US$ 11 billion last year.
Based on these results, our long friendship and partnership with the Canton Fair we congratulate and commemorate together with you, the 100th Session of the Chinese Export Commodities Fair.
The 100th session of the Canton Fair warmly welcome the new buyers and the frequent buyers
It’s the first time for Jose and his wife who from Honduras, Central American to attend the Canton Fair. “Large and splendid exhibition halls!” said Jose impressed, the business of his company is imaging equipments. I have deliberately come to the Fair to find if there are any new technology products here, so many manufacturers here, I am sure that we can find suitable products. Moreover, it is the100th session, I must come and see what will happen for the Fair is held for so long. “
Frequent Buyer: More exhibition area, more choice.
Riaan from South Africa who deal with the spare part of trailer has attended the Canton Fair for 10 sessions. Riaan witnessed the use of the Pazhou complex, deeply impressed, “More exhibition area, more choice for us.”
Riaan told the journalist emotionally, “The productions from China markets sold good, therefore his company has become large scale. Now the annual amount of the business with Chinese enterprises have reached 10 million U.S. dollars.” “We grow with the Canton Fair.” Riaan Said.
Three generations of grandparent and grandchild attach to Canton Fair
Mr. George Okocha from Nigeria made a phone call to the clerk of Guangzhou Light Holdings Limited from Lagos, said that he will come to the 100th session of the Canton Fair, this time his will bring his eldest child Gurmba.
Okocha said, in his childhood the family have the Chinese-made fan. The fan was used from his grandfather, it has worked for several decades, it was later learned that the brand of the fan called “Diamond”, mad in Guangdong.
From the 1980’s, Mr. George Okocha’s father attended the Fair to do his business, and ordered several hundreds of “Diamond” fans to Nigeria, he obtained a very good profit. From then on, the father came to China to do his business with Okocha. Now, add with Gurmba, Three generations of the Okocha’s attach to Guangzhou Light Holdings Limited and Canton Fair.
Okocha said that it is no longer for him to look for the fans in Canton Fair, because they have a good cooperative relationship with Guangzhou Light Holdings Limited. At the Fair, he is the most concerned about the launch of new products annually, because Guangzhou Light Holdings Limited has at least 30% new exhibits at every session of the Fair.
